For the members of the Camborne-Redruth Camera Club (C-RCC) it has been a very busy week. On Sunday (14-12-08) in rather inclement weather, members met in Helston to photograph the Christmas Lights.

On Tuesday (16-12-08) the Club’s Audio-Visual Group met at the Treleigh Church Hall. Mary Poad continued her tutorial on adding sound to a presentation using Audacity software. She talked about and demonstrated recording a commentary as well as editing sound and synchronising the track to specific slides. A good workflow was necessary including frequent saving as the programme develops and an efficient indexing system of folders and files. Mary also showed two A/V sequences, one of the Sunday field trip to Helston and the other of the history of the Minack Theatre, Porthcurno. The next meeting of the Group will be Tuesday 20 January.

On Thursday (18-12-08) again at Treleigh, Reg Poad (Chairman) introduced the well known wildlife photographer and author David Chapman to judge the 112 entries for the Memorial Trophy competition. David gave high praise for the overall standard and quality of the entries. He said that because of the number of images to judge his comments would be brief, nevertheless he was able to give constructive criticism where it mattered. He also felt that several of the Intermediate Class entries would certainly be very competitive in the Advanced Section.

Finally on Friday evening (19-12-08) the C-RCC held its Christmas Dinner at the “Inn for All Seasons”, Treleigh. A raffle raised £50.00 on behalf of the St. Julia’s and Mount Edgecumbe Hospices. Reg and Mary Poad distributed gifts to members and guests alike, and finally Richard McGee proposed a vote of thanks to Reg and Mary for organising such a successful and convivial evening.

Members of the Camborne-Redruth Camera Club met last Thursday 11 December at the Treleigh Church Hall for the projection of the Western Counties Photographic Federation’s 2008 Exhibition. Mary Poad outlined the judging procedure and said that it was a difficult exhibition in which to gain acceptances as in the print classes there was an entry of about 2000 which had to be whittled down to 150 prints. The cut off point was 11 points out of a total of 15 points. Having selected ‘the best of the best’ the remainder of the 11 points and above formed the travelling portfolio and will be on display at Treleigh on Thursday 8th January.

After the showing of the WCPF’s Prints and Projected Images Exhibition, the members enjoyed a supper of Christmas goodies.

The second half of the evening was devoted to Audio-Visual presentations by the Club’s A-V Group and included the first showing to the general membership of the Club’s entry “Southerly and Westerly” to WCPF’s AV Competition which takes place at the end of January at Clyst St Mary. The presentation was favourably received. The following members of the Group also showed their individual entries to the competition: Jenny Goodman – “South Devon Steam Railway” and “Spring & Autumn”, Val Burtenshaw “A View of Egypt”, Pam Pearce and David Johnson “Can we fix it?” and finally Mary Poad with two entries “Story of a Little Blind Girl” and “May in a Cornish Garden”.

Reg Poad, Mary Poad and Peter Keverne have work hung in the Tehidy Country Park’s Photo-Exhibition which will be on show at the Park’s Café until the end of December 2008.

Tonight (18-12-08) again at Treleigh starting at 07.30 pm David Chapman will be judging the entries for the annual Memorial Trophy Competition.

Tomorrow evening is the Club’s Annual Christmas Dinner taking place at ‘The Inn for All Seasons’, Treleigh which concludes the first part of its Winter Programme.

Last Thursday evening (04-12-08) members of the Camborne and Redruth Camera Club met at the Treleigh Church Hall, Redruth for the Annual Field Trip Competition.

There were sixteen field trips during 2008 and these covered a wide spread of Cornish beauty spots and two sorties into Devon to visit the Dartmoor Zoological Park and Buckfastleigh. Mary Poad (Competition Secretary) received 117 entries for judging. The images were judged by a panel of three judges, Maurice Oates and Malcolm and Barbara Jenkin. This year the generally accepted International method of judging was used for the first time where each judge could give a maximum of five points to each print or projected image. In the event of a tie the contenders would be reassessed following a closer scrutiny of the images. Jenny Goodman and Reg Poad were responsible for showing the prints and the calculations.

Last Thursday (27-11-08) Reg Poad (Chairman) of the C-RCC welcomed members to the Treleigh Church Hall, Redruth for an evening of tuition on Wildlife Photography, Photoshop Tips and Tricks and a discussion on tripods.

Following the break Mary Poad opened Photoshop Tips and Tricks by once again going over the method of resizing digital files for projection. The required sizes were 1024px by 768px at 72 dpi and saved as a jpeg. In her role as Competition Secretary she said that in future she would no longer resize entries on behalf of members as with the huge entries in the print and digital files competitions her time would be committed to logging and preparing schedules for judges.

The rest of the tutorial was devoted to ‘Making Selections’ and covered the use of the magic wand, quick selection tool, feathering the selection and using Refined Edges. Maurice Oates offered alternative methods.

Finally the following members Jenny Goodman, Reg Poad, Malcolm Jenkin, Richard McGee, David Johnson and Mark Ormerod either showed or offered advice on the selection of a suitable tripod. Other accessories were discussed including a suitable tripod or monopod head, angle viewfinders and an extension cable for triggering the camera.

Reg Poad thanked everyone who participated in the evening.

Tonight (04-12-08) is the Field Trip Competition and the judges will be Maurice Oates, Malcolm and Barbara Jenkin.

On Tuesday (18-11-08) the members of the Camborne-Redruth Camera Club’s AV Group met at the Treleigh Church Hall, Redruth. Mary Poad introduced a series of tutorials on the basics of adding sound and a commentary to an Audio/Visual programme using the software Audacity.

After the break the following members showed their 3 minute sequences: Val Burtenshaw, Bob Morgan, Jenny Goodman, Mary Poad, Peter Keverne, Pam Pearce and David Johnson.

Finally there was the first showing of the Club’s entry to the Western Counties Photographic Federation’s AV Competition taking place in January next year at Clyst St Mary, Devon.  The A/V was produced by Jenny Goodman and Mary Poad using images provided by several members of the Club and covered a journey from England’s most southerly point The Lizard to its Westerly Point at Lands End. The A/V was enthusiastically received by those present.

The next AV Group meeting will be on 16 December and members have been asked to prepare a sequence which includes a voice over.

On Wednesday (19-11-08) C-RCC members travelled to Wadebridge for a three way Inter-Club Competition with the home club and St Ives Camera Club. The judge for the evening was Ian Smith (Launceston Camera Club). Wadebridge Camera Club ran out the winners with St Ives and C-RCC tying for second place.

Last Thursday (20-11-08) at the Treleigh Church Hall there was a practical evening organised by David Johnson and members had the opportunity to photograph Fruit, Flowers and Ceramics. David and Reg Poad were on hand to help the less experienced with the art of photographing still life subjects.

Delia Trathen who was present at the judging of the WCPF Kingswood Salver Competition in Bristol informed the members that no Cornish Club featured in the results of the Competition which was won by the Bristol Camera Club. She gave a brief résumé of the judge’s comments about the C-RCC’s entry.

Tonight again at Treleigh starting at 07.30 pm there will be a digital tutorial evening and tips on photographing wild life. Members are reminded to bring in their entries for the Field Trips Competition.
