Camborne & Redruth Camera Club (CRCC)

Sunday 14th March 2010

The Camborne-Redruth Camera Club met last Thursday (11-03-10) at the Treleigh Church Hall, Redruth for an evening mainly devoted to High Dynamic Range (HDR) processing. HDR is a method that enables one to replicate the tonal range of a subject that the eye can see and beyond that of the modern digital sensor by combining multiple images taken at different exposures.

Mary Poad ran the tutorial and processed images using only two of the several available pieces of software namely Artizen and Dynamic Photo. It was pointed out that HDR was not a method to make a bad image into a good one but rather to make a good picture even better by extending its tonal range. The basic method is to take at least three different exposures at a fixed aperture taking into account the highlights, midtones and the shadows of the subject, each at two stops difference by varying the shutter speed. The exposures are then combined to form the HDR image which is further processed by a method known as tone mapping, resulting in the final image.

Even so this image may still not be satisfactory and further processing can be done within the aforementioned software or taken back into Photoshop. Mary showed a range of before and after images covering a variety of subjects. Where there is a lot of movement within the subject then it is possible to generate three separate images preferably from a single RAW file. Reg Poad thanked Mary for the tutorial and Clive Kingsley and Peter Keverne for additional information.

With some time to spare the evening finished with a further tutorial showing how to tint a monochrome image, and a projection of the winning club entries in the recent WCPF Projected Images Competition.

Last Sunday (14-03-10), CRCC commenced its field trip season with a half day visit to the Tehidy Country Park. The next scheduled fieldtrip is on Sunday 28 March with a visit to Antony House & Park meeting at its car park at 10.45 am.

Tonight, again at Treleigh, there will be the fourth and final Open Competition of the Winter Programme to be judged by Adrian Rowlands (Truro Camera Club).

The CRCC’s website has been off line for a while following a malicious attack on its site. The website, which has been completely rebuilt by the club’s webmaster Andy Davies, is up and running once again and further development will continue, but all the relevant information is now available.
