Reg Poad (Chairman) announced that in the Western Counties Photographic Federation’s 2008 Exhibition Selection, Mary Poad, Delia Trathen, Bob Morgan and himself had acceptances for the Main exhibition and also its travelling portfolio.

Tonight (03-04-08) at the Treleigh Church Hall starting at 07.30pm will be the final slide presentation of the Dingwall Salon. On Saturday (05-04-08) there is a Field trip to the Screech Owl Sanctuary.

The Audio Visual Group of C-RCC met on Tuesday 18 March at the Treleigh Church Hall. Mary Poad gave a Photoshop Tutorial on the preparation of a Digital File for printing and also talked about obtaining profiles for a specific printer and paper and followed this with an Audio/Visual Tutorial devoted to sound recording and the editing of sound using the freeware software Audacity, Audiograbber and Lame.  The remaining part of the evening was devoted to members’ A/V sequences.

Mary Poad showed two sequences - ‘Hanging the C-RCC 2008 Exhibition’’ and ‘It’s raining again’. Clive Kingsley - ‘Springtime-Tehidy Woods’ backed by his own music. Barbara Jenkin - ‘Falkland Islands’ coverage of a recent holiday. Jenny Goodman - ‘Daffodils’ based on Wordsworth’s poem and ‘Tigers’ taken at Dartmoor Zoological Park and Peter Keverne - coverage of the ‘Boconnoc Spring Flower Show 2007’.

Last Thursday evening (20-03-08) again at Treleigh, C-RCC took on Helston Camera Club (HCC) in the final Inter-Club Competition of the winter programme. It was a close run thing with C-RCC coming out winners by only eight points.

Margaret Hocking of Truro Camera Club was the judge who thanked the home Club for the opportunity to judge her first digital competition. She made various points before she started her commentary. She felt it was necessary with natural history subjects there should be some distinction between those pictures taken in the wild as against those taken in captive situations or in zoological parks. The former should be marked ‘Wild and Free’ and if comparing like pictures the former would gain higher marks because of increase in technical difficulty. She stressed that there should be consistency in the file sizes for the Projected Images section which would make the projection so much quicker. During her judging she emphasised the good points she found in any picture first but made suggestions where in her opinion the picture could be improved. She also felt that the titling of the picture was very important.

The next Field Trip will be to the Screech Owl Sanctuary on Saturday 5th April.

Just before the weekly meeting of the Camborne-Redruth Camera Club got under way last Thursday evening, (13-03-08) nonagenarian Reg Sweet (Treasurer) made a presentation on behalf of the Club to Reg and Mary Poad who will be celebrating their Ruby Wedding this Easter, and as a personal gift a bottle of champagne.
Reg Poad (Chairman) then introduced the Chairman of the Cornwall Photographic Alliance and noted Wildlife Photographer David Chapman. David commenced his talk by showing various pieces of equipment that he uses in addition to his basic camera equipment such as extension tubes, these when connected to a zoom lens make a very useful macro lens, a ‘bottle top’ reflector, tripods with different types of heads and improvised equipment such as a mounted watertight glass sandwich so that tadpoles and other small aquatic creatures could be photographed.

He opened his illustrated talk, saying that to be really successful as a natural history photographer, it was necessary to understand your subject, have a passion for the subject and for photography. David continued showing many examples that met these criteria. He was generous with his information and gave many hints and tips regarding choice of camera equipment, lenses, flash guns, the useful angle viewfinder and shooting techniques. One technique that appealed was photographing a green woodpecker. The bird has a love of ants. The question was how to find ants that were in a suitable position so the bird could be photographed. The answer was to spread some jam on a tree branch which in turn attracted the ants which attracted the woodpecker and the resulting picture was superb.

He finished his talk showing some of the landscape photography featured in his book ‘Penwith Moods’ which included an interesting night picture of the ‘Men an Tol’ using a technique ‘Painting with Light’ more often associated with interior architectural photography, and a series of pictures to illustrate a book written by his wife Sarah entitled ‘Iconic Cornwall’ to be published soon by Alison Hodge.

Maurice Oates gave the vote of thanks saying that it was so rare that a professional photographer was willing to share his secrets of ‘How to, and knowledge’ as David had done during the evening and emphasised the point to get your picture ‘You got to be there’ as the final secret.

On Sunday (16-03-08) C-RCC members met at Tehidy Country Park for the first field trip of 2008.
Tonight at Treleigh Church Hall starting at 07.30 pm, C-RCC meets Helston CC in the final Inter-Club Competition of the Winter Programme the judge is Margaret Hocking of Truro CC.

The Camborne-Redruth Camera Club (C-RCC) met last Thursday (06-03-08) at the Treleigh Church Hall. Reg Poad (Chairman) informed the members that Bob Morgan had gained third position in the Western Counties Photographic Federation’s Knightshayes Trophy Competition, ‘Spirit of the Place’ with his print ‘London Commuters’. He added that in last week’s (28-02-08) Inter-Club Competition at Falmouth, C-RCC had a seventeen point victory over the FCC.

Reg Poad told the meeting that the judge for the evening’s Print and Projected Images Panels, Jenny Leathes, was unable to attend owing to illness. However she had managed during the week to look at and mark the work presented as well as providing notes on her judgement for the Competition Secretary, Mary Poad to read. The competition attracted eleven print panels and twenty eight Projected Images panels.

Jenny’s judgement was based on panels that were technically good, cohesive, sharp, with variety in the chosen theme and presentation. She also thought that in the Projected Image Panels, the Intermediate entries had the edge over the Advanced workers.

As well as the official judgement, members were asked to consider the print panels and to vote for their favourite entries. When the Panels were projected members were encouraged to make comments on the work and for authors to talk about their panels and how the results were achieved.
