January 2008

Camborne-Redruth Camera Club (C-RCC) met last Thursday (24-01-08) at the Treleigh Church Hall. Reg Poad (Chairman) informed the members that the Exhibition at the Cornwall Centre, Alma Place, Redruth was up and running and had received very favourable reports from the viewing public. The exhibition closes on Saturday afternoon (02-02-08). The Chairman thanked Jenny Goodman, Mary Poad and Peter Keverne for their help in hanging the exhibition.
The speaker for the evening was the Club’s President Malcolm Jenkin whose subject was ‘The Preparation and Presentation of a Panel of Five Prints’. As far as he was aware there were no set rules for the production of a panel and he discussed the formation of a panel whether it was to be in ‘Landscape’ or ‘Portrait’ format or a mixture of both.

In an interactive session he projected five groups of five slides and asked the members to form a panel of five slides selecting one from each group. The result was a variety of combinations and very few were duplicated, thus proving that selection was a personal thing.

Malcolm talked about the consistency of mounting the prints – same size mount and bevelled frame, same colour and ideally all the finishing work to be carried out at the same session.

In almost any panel there is going to be a ‘strong’ print and as the western world reads from left to right, so it is with pictures. The placing of that print was very important and usually placed to the right of centre.
Using his Associate RPS portrait panel he asked members to select five prints to form a panel. Duplicate prints were also introduced with different printing tones and though some were of better quality they did not necessarily fit into the display. The result showed that ‘impact’ pictures with more contrast work well in a panel.

Barbara Jenkin then took up the theme and this time it was choosing images to form an Audio/Visual sequence. She showed a short sequence entitled ‘Animals of Las Vegas’ that included dolphins, lions and tigers. Again the members were involved in choosing images from a digital lightbox to make and compare the communal sequence with the original one. The result was interesting - though the starting and ending images were the same the mix was very different with more images chosen covering the same piece of music.
Mary Poad in her vote of thanks thanked Malcolm and Barbara for a very interesting and informative evening.
This Thursday at the Treleigh Church Hall starting at 07.30 pm Steve Hicks and Lee Searle will be talking about ‘Submitting images for a Photo-library’ and ‘Portraiture’.

First Mary Poad demonstrated techniques for the preparation of images suitable for projection including resizing, straightening horizons, correcting colour casts and adding a border to a picture. She then went on to show how an A/V sequence was assembled using the popular PicturestoExe software favoured by most A/V workers in the UK. The second part of the evening was devoted to the projection of members’ sequences and these showed a wide range of subject material and choice of music. Members showing programmes were Jenny Goodman, Barbara Jenkin, Mary Poad, Clive Kingsley and Peter Keverne. The next Group meeting will be Tuesday 19 February 2008.
Last Thursday (17-01-08) was competition evening, the subject being ‘The Spirit of the Place’. The judge, Neil Souch of Camborne was introduced to members by Reg Poad (Chairman). Neil in his opening remarks defined his interpretation of the set subject that the emphasis should be purely on ‘The Place’ but some entries had not met this criterion.
